I use journaling to note ideas, brainstorm ideas, and visualise basic elements of an artwork to be created (drawings with focus on line, form, shape, scale, etc.). I am also interested in using text in my artwork and practice this in my notebooks by designing layout and style of text to use. Notes, sketches and drawings help me clarify ideas.
Notebook (Visual thinking)
Scans of some selected pages from notebooks related to my research and ideas explored in studio art practice.
Drawings, sketches and photo-collages
My drawing is mostly intuitive and line-based. The exploratory drawings/collages are the foundation for my thinking process. Later these become material and content for paintings, objects and installations, or are finished works in themselves. I also scan, and digitally manipulate my drawings to better understand its relation to a particular theme. Another way I create imagery and explore themes is through collage, photo-collage, paint on photographs, and combining drawings and collage work.
